Opening Parliamentary Year 2019-2020

On the occasion of the opening of Parliamentary Year 2019-2020 a Solemn Plenary Session was held on Tuesday, September 10, 2019. This is an annual occurring event, in accordance with article 46 of the Constitution, on the second Tuesday in September that marks the beginning of the new parliamentary year. His Excellency the Governor of Sint Maarten, drs. Eugene B. Holiday, delivered his speech to the Members of Parliament, the Members of the Council of Ministers and other persons present.

In his speech, His Excellency made mention of start of 10th parliamentary year, cloud of political uncertainty, climate change, slowing global economy, escalating trading disputes, war against money laundering and terrorism financing, contraction of our economy, decline Government revenues, rehabilitation airport terminal, strengthening social systems, care environment, waste management, strengthening disaster preparedness and management, intensify cooperation with French side and international and regional partners, associate Member of CARICOM, education master plan, 4th Kingdom Task Force 2019, availability of affordable housing, strengthening law enforcement etc.

The Solemn Plenary Session was followed by a military parade in which marines and our local police officers and VKS members participated. This important parade is a comprehensive part of our island’s honorary service.

After this parade the invited guests proceeded to the reception at Sheer restaurant hosted by the Hon. President of Parliament, Sarah A. Wescot-Williams.
